EducatedGuess's music...

Realised I'd forgotten to write a profile. So, um, well.... I'm 19 and I live in New Zealand. I've played piano since i was just a wee thing. Started playing guitar when I was 12. Didn't take lessons, just used my musical knowlege and dove straight into song writing. When I was 14 my family and I took a year trip round Europe. We were based on a on a barge on a french canal for about 3 months, so I used to take off on my bike into the vinyards with my guitar on my back. This is where I discovered lots of little tricks and my own songwriting technique. After that it was all uphill really. I dumped my crappy old Fender when my parents bought me an Ovation for my 16th (the exact same model John Lennon used ;) haha) Then I eventually dumped that when my parents recently (and stressed that it would be the last time) bought me the most beautiful guitar I've ever played. It's a really really nice Taylor. All of my recordings on the site at the moment are with my Ovation however.

I don't own or play an electric. I guess that will be my next step.

My biggest influence in the world is Ani Difranco.

I really love this site. It's a great home-base for musicians.

A Name Like Tobleron

It's "A Name Like Toblerone" it just wouldn't fit it all in.

I wrote aobut this woman down our hill who is like 30, but looks about 70. Sad sad story. So I wrote this song. Which probably has nothing to do with her, but was inspired by her.

VERSE 1:

Severed fingernails beneath the teeth she bites them with,
A silver bangle dangling from her wrist.
Knuckles white and hard from years of smoking cigarettes,
She doesn't have that long (I think you get the gist)

She's a sinker,
On a fishing wire.

VERSE 2:

She's this crooked little easel of a girl,
Clumps of hair they tear and fall about the place.
And when she smiles (which isn't often, and it takes a while)
It's like her lips against the grain of her face.

She's a sinker,
And she's cast away.

VERSE 3:

She has a name because her mother called her Toblerone,
She has a dog which she just calls Dog.
And when it yelps it coughs and splutters through the living room,
And wades its way into the niccotene fog.

She's a sinker,
She's a sinker,
She's a sinker,

And she's sinking down,

Here.

Adrenaline

I only have half this song. I was experimenting with backing vocals, only did half... and then lost the original :P Sorry folks!

VERSE 1

I am on fire.
With this red wall a-blazing,
the silver and the smoke.

A subtle gun fire.
In the distance is a sound,
In the cemetery fields.

CHORUS:

And I wanted to fall,
Long before this feeling came,
But it’s saved me on it’s own.

Adrenaline burns,
In the marrow of my bones,
In this suited lightweight skin.

VERSE 2:

Time and lavender sears.
And fills the air around,
I am anxious just to breathe it in.

Fine weather all around.
Cycles in my veins,
I’m this sympathetic stranger.

CHORUS:

All That I Can Be

Well Here it is. The first track off my piano EP. (well actually the second, this is just the first I've uploaded)

The vocals were double tracked and recorded in my friend's flat using some pretty basic gear. The piano was recorded in a 300 year old chapel on a grand piano. Which had an extremely loud pedal but it's not too noticable thankfully.

My good friend Bella put double bass in a few of the tracks which sounds beautiful.

VERSE 1

I know all the things that people say I hear them everyday.
And I know all the things you like and dislike in me.
But I’m not ready for this kind of conversation where you break down,
What I am and what i wish that I could be.

I’m this passive little angel underneath it all,
But come across as something harder to digest, I guess.
When i’m older and i’m wiser I will know my weaker side,
But for now I’m young and bold enough with nothing here to hide.

CHORUS:

And I,
Had always been the same one there.
And I,
Am not the one who’s changed round here

X2

Didn’t you notice that?

VERSE 2

I’m aware of all remarks in absence of my presence,
I’m well informed of what i should and shouldn’t say.
And I have trouble with my foot and what I put it in,
I am walking I am moving but I only seem to stay.

I am sure I’ll never change i’ll probably always stay the same,
There’s nothing left I haven’t lost before that I can’t lose again.
So i’ll continue on my way before I go I’d like to say,
I’m only one man. With two hands. I’m all that I can be.

CHORUS:

OUTRO:

I’m only one man with two hands I’m all that I can be.
(Two hands I am all I can be)

I’m only one man with two hands I’m all that I can be.
(Two hands I am all I can be)

I’m only one man with two hands I’m all that I can be.
(Two hands I am all I can be)

Haven't posted anything for aaages. Thought I'd throw this out here. didn't play it all that well however, was a little hungover ;)

VERSE:

Somewhere, deep beneath the ocean,

Lies this box of voices hiding,

Masked in, dust like sand storms underwater.

CHORUS:

It’s the words I cannot say,
When I need them most of all.

It’s the ones that cut so deep,
Are pressing on my walls.

Release this anchor, thank you,
For all you haven’t done.

I’ll be waiting when they come.

VERSE:

Tie me down a rock is nearby,

Vocal flood walls leave me dripping words out,

Of my mouth when I have so much built up.

Breathe in Deeply

Ok, I've sort of forgotten how to play this. It's in a tuning I can't quite remember. But I found it and thought I'd put it up here as I haven't posted anything in ages.

I wrote it when I first got my present guitar. So a year and a half ago? It's a pretty emotional song.

VERSE 1

Air blows through doorways,
Shadows swimming in your eyes.
Fingerprints line the windows,
A small demise.

CHORUS

Warning all the pretty faces,
Warning all the simple minds.
You were so high when you crashed down,
It was so fast when you hit the ground.

I know, because you fell on me.

VERSE 2

Whispers breathe in deeply,
Eyelash fall upon the floor.
Blinks all sink into the teardrops,
And you miss it even more.

CHORUS

Warning all who point the finger,
Warning all who have done wrong.
You were so high when you crashed down,
It was so fast when you hit the ground.

I know, because you fell on me.

Evergreen

Finally! It works! this is quite seriously my 6th attempt at getting this song to load and play. Well done Chester. Well done.

Yes, so this is an old song... but has always held sentimental value with me :)

Check out my other stuff, I load another 2 songs today. A piano one, and then half a song... because i lost the other half... long story.

Seems a lot of people are adding lyrics. So I thought I'd put mine on a couple of songs :)

VERSE 1

So you’ve run away again?
And left nothing in your place.
Except a shadow and a sin,
Etched forever in your space.

PRECHORUS:

Than she turns to you and smiles,
At where you’ve been.
And says life ain’t,
Evergreen.

CHORUS:

Come fall down,
Get blown around.
You’re a leaf up in the air,
And it’s the autumn of your year.

VERSE 2

Well time is coming round the bend,
It seems you try too hard to smile.
And it’s only near the end,
That you find your inner child.

PRECHORUS:
It’s always,
Inbetween.
That you find life ain’t,
Evergreen.

CHORUS:

Come fall down,
Get blown around.
You’re a leaf up in the air,
And it’s the autumn of your year. X2

OUTRO:

You’re a leaf up in the air,
And it’s the autumn of your year.
Your year.

Evergreen (LIVE)

Thought some of you might be interested in this. This is from a recent gig with a couple of my friends playing along to some of my tracks.

It's not a particularly good recording because we only had two inputs so both the guitars are one track and all the vocals are one track. It also starts off a bit shaky, pitchy. But it gets really good I think.

Thoughts/comments much appreciated!

Features

Probably the weirdest song I've ever written. And I screwed up in it so I only got halfway through. But this is the only recording of it. So deal with it.

VERSE 1

There's a mouth on the ground,
Out of breath, out of sound.
There it lies in wait for a face,
Strung out on lipgloss and toothpaste.

There are eyes on the floor,
Eyelid ruins attatched no more.
Vacant stare, too sad to sleep,
All dried out, too tired to weep.

CHORUS

My face is falling apart,
It's been days since human interaction.
My lips to lonely to part,
Other features to perform any other action.

VERSE 2

There's a nose......

Haha. Yeah. Well.

Five Lost Friends V2

The new improved version of five lost friends. Waaaay better. and faster.

VERSE 1

Seems she's burned like a cigarette,
Tangled up in the fishing net,
Gone and caught herself again.

She's so tired from fighting this,
fingers wrapped into battle fists,
Lost all energy to stand.

CHORUS

She lost five,
Five of her friends
She doesn't know,
Know as of yet,
She has heard,
she lives in the dark.

X2

VERSE 2

And she'd be tall if she only tried,
Always landing the easy side,
Flip a coin the battle won.

She'd be hurt if she only knew,
What she'd done and who came through,
All her friends wear half a smile.

CHORUS

She lost five,
Five of her friends
She doesn't know,
Know as of yet,
She has heard,
she lives in the dark.

X2

Gravity V2

This one goes out to Iszil, it's not actually finished yet. But I thought I'd better put it up.

VERSE 1

Sometimes words disappear,
In relation to what's there,
And you don't say a word.

You are a red light and he is a car,
He runs right through all your scars.
And you don't know why.

CHORUS

When the earth is turning too,
Gravity is pulling you and crushing all your rhythm,
You find it hard to understand how things could get so out of hand,
Without you making a single decision.

VERSE 2

You wander, wondering for days on end,
Hoping some answer will impend on you,
But nothing appears,
You feel trapped inside the years you lost with him...

BRIDGE

And it fucking hurts I know,
But the pain inside will always show much whiter,
On the black spots of your life.

CHORUS

When the earth is turning too,
Gravity is pulling you and crushing all your rhythm,
You find it hard to understand how things could get so out of hand,
Without you making a single decision.

Last Year

Right, so there was this girl. And we kept ALMOST going out. But I'd always end up with someone else. And I was unintentionally screwing her round, and she really really liked me.

Then I went to uni and she stayed at school. then I was her in this play and she's the most amazing actress. I mean, seriously. so I was gutted - needless to say - and came home and wrote this song aobut what it'd be like if I ended up seeing her in the movies while i worked as like, a cashier at a pizza hut. Ha.

Anyway, bad quality (as you've come to learn from my additions to the musical world) and I had a cold when it was recorded. Also I make loads of mistakes. But I've given up caring.

VERSE 1:

Silence in the darkness of the theatre,
Everyone's watching your mouth move.
When did you disappear?
Speak in a whisper, "I knew her once, before she was here..."

CHORUS:

All of the make-up and lights that seems to follow you 'round,
Can't make you happiuer then before you entered this town.
i know you long ago, how quickly the world disappeared,
Oh I wish it was last year.

VERSE 2:

Remember the days when a photograph was a photograph?
Not a piece of production to increase the suction of age-demographs.
I remember a scene where your face could be seen in person not magazines,
Am I wrong to miss you? And I being Naive?

CHORUS:

All of the make-up and lights that seems to follow you 'round,
Can't make you happier than before you entered this town.
i know you long ago, how quickly the world disappeared,
Oh I wish it was last year.

It's a little more upbeat than some of my others.

Melancholia V2

The is the first song off the EP. It has a real opening track sound to it. We had loads of takes of the start and ones with a real even chromatic part. But in the end myself and the guy I was recording the EP with decided we likes the uneven sound of the chromatic scales, gave it character.

Of course this was originally called 'Melancholic' but it just sounded lame. So here ya go :)

this song has piano, upright bass, electric bass and vocals in it.

VERSE 1

Welcome to this melancholic town,
she said with a spaced out stare that said everything.
Without anything at all,
But the expression on her face told a tale about the place.

I couldn't run,
And all of the etchings on the walls,
Suggested there'd been no apparent leisure here at all.

CHORUS

You've got a problem,
When you've got nowhere to hide,
And the walls that surround you,
Are the ones you've been assigned.

VERSE 2

Furthermore I'd been talked of here inside,
Before I'd even known I was going to arrive,
I smelt sabotage and treason in the air,
Men in uniform told me what to think and what to wear.

I was trapped inside the body of a beast,
I screamed and gnawed the inside with the edges of my teeth.

CHORUS

You've got a problem,
When you've got nowhere to hide,
And the walls that surround you,
Are the ones you've been assigned.

Obligations

Um, wrote this on the otherside of New Zealand. It's about admitting you're wrong basically :)

VERSE 1

There’s a place,
Where the worn becomes the new.
Few people know that it exsists,
Where redemption’s just admittance away.

And dignity will stay,
If situations are level with your head.

My,
What time.
I thought there for a while that i had won.
What a joke,
Falling prey to circumstance light years away.

CHORUS:

It’s a heavy obligation when you’re singing your own song.
And you’ve only just been told that you’re singing it all wrong.
And you think the words can’t change you’ve been singing them too long.

It’s a heavy obligation X3

But there’s a place you can go,
To lighten the load.

VERSE 2

March,
Fell.
April came and went and turned to may.
Today, here I stand clutching on to shame.
Won’t let up,
Waiting here for something to erupt.

Still,
It stays.
Locked inside my body aching maze.
And I’m right.
Right?

CHORUS:

Hey guys! So I've decided to post all the tracks that didn't make it onto the EP. They're very basic. Once we'd recorded the piano or guitar and vocals we decided which ones were going on the EP. So while the tracks on the EP have loads of instruments, these are all pretty basic.

You can get my EP from my myspace page in about a weeks time. It has 7 tracks and it's sounding pretty good! You can also hear about 4 of the tracks on there.

Thanks for everyone's kind words on Seven a while back :) This is the revised version, which, as many people will agree, sound a million times better. Complete with E-Bow near the end :D Sorry about the gap at the start, I could be bothered deleting it.

ENJOY!

Stay

Ok, Um here's another one I just wrote. computer mic recording too. I'm recording it properly next week on wednesday :) Open E tuning.

FIRST VERSE

Sleeping would now be a treat,
As she walked through her living room.
Conscious of every creak,
As another day loomed.

Hoping that someone would find her,
Take her home and decide for her what she would do.

Morning came like a bag cement to the face,
Woke her awake from her awoken state in the first place.
Hoping that someone to keep,
Would come and put her to sleep at the end of her day.

CHORUS

She said "Hey, I am cold,
And I'm getting so old,
And I sometimes think...

"What I came here to find,
Is sure taking its time,
Does it matter? Should I settle?
And stay?"

2nd VERSE

Crimson in colour,
Her lips start to stutter a melody.
Fingers tap rhythms on tables,
Ordered and clean.

Hoping that someone would come by,
Accidently catch her eye.

CHORUS

She said "Hey, I am cold,
And I'm getting so old,
And I sometimes think...

"What I came here to find,
Is sure taking its time,
Does it matter? Should I settle?
And stay?"

Swing

This is a song I wrote for my g/f. I put it up here because what i've done to the chorus is really weird and you either love it of hate it. Plus i didn't really put an awful lot of time into it so it sort of pales out near the end.

VERSE 1:

I know things are kinda weird right now,
And you're going through some stuff.
the earths orbit a treadmill,
And you can't run fast enough.

You gotta pause and take a moment,
A-fix a tighter pair of shoes.
Because I know you're made of something,
That is destined not to lose.

And, baby,
It hurts to see you in this state.
If only feelings could redeem themselves,
And all the spirits that they break.

CHORUS:

(And I...)

And I am here whenever.

(And I...)

And I've been here forever.

(And I...)

Let me be the teather,
On which you swing.

VERSE 2:

And when the world begins to shatter,
And you're stepping on the cracks.
I'll be there to push the wheelchair,
When it finally breaks your back.

You remind me of a dingy,
Floating out at sea.
I'm that lighthouse in the distance,
Guiding you to safety.

And It'll rain a little harder, still,
You'll probably get a bit more cold.
But just imagine how great that shower will feel,
When you finally get a hold.

CHORUS:

(And I...)

And I am here whenever.

(And I...)

And I've been here forever.

(And I...)

Let me be the teather,
On which you swing.

Tainted

Recorded about five minutes after All That I Can Be, you'll probably be able to spot the similarities.

VERSE 1

Colours all tainted and bright,
In this room on the edge of the night.
Goodbye words, burning her lips,
And sticks to the air like dust.

She said I'm going outside for a while,
The gate was open all year.
Hinges all rusted, and buckled the weight,
Of the gate on the post by the door.

CHORUS

But she never came home, never came back,
Silence in the act, you'll never take back,
What you had said.

VERSE 2

Summers spent locked up in bed,
Feeling her absense fills up your head,
Like a cloud over your bones,
Echoing softly the whispers and moans.

Your body's this temple, trembles and aches,
Can't get to sleep but you're never awake.
Agressively tumbling, can't find the brakes,
To just stop.

CHORUS

But she never came home, never came back,
Silence in the act, you'll never take back,
What you had said.

BRIDGE

But something was wrong,
Admittedly, nothing was right.
It wasn't like her to run away,
Into the night.

The Fate

Hey everyone. This is one of the tracks off an EP I'm recording.

VERSE 1

Where's this little idea gunna grow from here?
It's a tree I care for,
And everyday I rejoice.

Safe in the knowledge that with every choice,
I build a new life for myself.

PRECHORUS

Don't you understand,
That it's already planned,
It's nothing to do with the steps that we take...

CHORUS

But I,
I have a voice,
And I'm gunna sing you till spring,
Then I'll watch you grow wings and depart.

But it won't be long,
Till you carry on,
With the life that we built with you right from the start.

VERSE 2

When's our fate gunna levitate?
We're stuck in limbo,
Wanting to explore our range.

Standing akimbo,
Like a superhero,
Waiting for something to change.

PRECHORUS

Don't you understand,
That it's already planned,
It's nothing to do with the steps that we take...

CHORUS

But I,
I have a voice,
And I'm gunna sing you till spring,
Then I'll watch you grow wings and depart.

But it won't be long,
Till you carry on,
With the life that we built with you right from the start.

The Propaganda Song

Haha, yeah this is a bit of a joke song. Written for what is now my girlfriend, but wasn't at the time. as she was all Anti-relationships. So it was a kind of just-freaking-go-out-with-me song. She knew it wasn't serious though. Ok, sorry if this makes little to no sense.... I'm very drunk.

W T P P

Well, this song is called 'Where the problematic play' but it wouldn't fit in the title bar. This is my newest recorded piano track :)

This completes all 5 tracks on my piano EP, enjoy.

VERSE 1

Somewhere,
In the middle of the jungle,
Where the problematic play.

I am,
Hacking my way through the vines,
Of nerves inside my brain.

Trying,
To find,
Someway to explain.

CHORUS

This one goes out,
To the women in the magazines,
Who pout and try to tell to tell me who to be,
But they're not fooling me,
Hell no,
Hell no,
Hell no,
I'd rather die alone.

VERSE 2

Don't waste time,
On the telephone line,
It'll only deceive.

Practice counting cards,
And do your best to,
Preconceive.

I hold a key inside,
The underside,
Of my fist,

And there are many things,
Many strings I could pull with,

This...

CHORUS

...One goes out
To the women in the magazines,
Who pout and try to tell to tell me who to be,
But they're not fooling me,
Hell no,
Hell no,
Hell no,
I'd rather die alone.

Wasted Life

The first thing you'll probably notice in this song is I sing quite high. And I do. Sorry. Haha.

This is one of my all time favourites, but my family and friends aren't too amped on it. They think it's pretty middle of the road. It's up to you really. Just thought I'd put it out there.

VERSE 1:

Split the distance,
Find the difference,
Between numbers,
One and two.

Shadows flicker,
Peel a sticker,
Off a public,
Bathroom wall.

CHORUS:

Tell me mr was-somebody,
How'd you pass your time?
'Cause life is fast and yours has passed,
Teach me how to not go wasting mine.

VERSE 2:

Tracing light beams through,
Dusty skylit rooms,
With stationairy weary,
Staring eyes.

Holding onto nothing,
Lost in sunken mystery,
Crushing,
Down upon me.

CHORUS:

Tell me mr was-somebody,
How'd you pass your time?
'Cause life is fast and yours has passed,
Teach me how to not go wasting mine.

Weight Of Wrong

OK, This is the last one I'll put up for a while. I fear I'm pissing people off :P I'm gunna concentrate on commenting on more people's work. I've just been so busy.

VERSE 1

Oh shit,
Guess I got the wrong end of the stick,
I guess you thought your magic tricks would,
Fool me more than this.

But I thought you'd know,
I'm just too old for magic shows

CHORUS

Well I guess I'm gunna go,
I hope you hold onto your pride,
'Cause it won't be long,
'Till the weight of your wrong,
Leaves it the only thing in your life.

Well I know it hurts now baby,
But you just gotta let it slide.

VERSE 2

Oh fuck,
Seems you'ce really screwed things up,
Or didn't I squint hard enough,
To keep you in my view?

And you,
Flew.

Nevermind.

CHORUS

Well I guess I'm gunna go,
I hope you hold onto your pride,
'Cause it won't be long,
'Till the weight of your wrong,
Leaves it the only thing in your life.

Well I know it hurts now baby,
But you just gotta let it slide.

Who Am I?

Pretty dark, far more rocky song. Just thought I'd put this up here for variation. Terrible recording again, etc etc... I know I know. But Unless I actually care about the song I'll never get round to recording it properly. Haha.

VERSE 1

Take your pictures off my shelf,
Nothing ever seems to help.
No medicine, no hospital,
Could revive this pulseless will.

Change your tune and change your breath,
Everything seems so bereft.
Of meaning and of consequence,
Seems I've let my future flinch.

CHORUS

When you wonder who am I,
I put my heart into your eyes.
You will see my conscience dive,
Wanna kill me? So do I.

GET IN LINE.

VERSE 2

So what's your secret, what the key?
To complete solidarity.
Tell me who I need to call,
To get rid of it all.

Don't refute it, don't negate,
Nothing you say has any weight.
Hold a candle, watch it melt,
that's how I feel - that's how I felt.

CHORUS

Change your tune and change your breath,
Everything seems so bereft.
Of meaning and of consequence,
Seems I've let my future flinch.

When you wonder who am I,
I put my heart into your eyes.
You will see my conscience dive,
Wanna kill me? So do I.

GET IN LINE.

Concept song-ish thing....

I've sent it to a few people on here and they liked it so I figured.."Hey, i'll enter it"

If you search through the lyrics archives you'll see I posted the lyrics ages and ages ago before I'd recorded the song.

Try and make it past the intro.
